From The Dress Code

People generally refer to various groups of actors who constitute the culture of dress. At the most basic level, people can be seen as the user base of clothing in accordance with their social norms, which may vary depending on time and place. The only notable exception to this all-inclusive category is social nudists, a minority people within the naturist movement who advocate nudism in public. As the vast majority of participants acquire clothes through purchase, people also represent the consumer base of the fashion economy. In addition to the daily use of clothing, some people assume more active roles in the production and distribution of clothing, from designers, manufacturers and merchandisers to advertisers, sponsors and curators.

Terminology

Within the Dress Code, the following definitions are used to describe different groups of participants in clothing.

  • Designer: A person who develops the aesthetic of garments and accessories into prototypes, usually a creative professional who works within the textile industry.
  • Brand: A group of businesspeople who execute the production of design prototypes and distribution of merchandises, such as textile manufacturers, marketers and merchandising professionals.
  • Vendor: A group of businesspeople who buy clothes from manufacturers in bulk and sell them to consumers on their own platforms, such as intermediary merchandisers and retailers.
  • Icon: A person of fame whose style of dress is adopted or imitated by the rest of the user base at large, such as fashion models and celebrities who receive public exposure on a regular basis.
  • Curator: A person who influences the behaviors of users and consumers by advocating or critiquing certain fashion styles and trends, such as fashion publications, photographers and bloggers.
  • User: A person who wears clothes on a daily basis and buys them on a regular basis through decisions based on personal aesthetic values, contemporary trends or a combination of both.
